In 2013, Monteverdi opened its fine dining restaurant in the heart of the village of Castiglioncello.  In homage to the enchanting beauty of the region, the restaurant is named Oreade, after the mythological Greek nymphs and goddesses that were believed to populate mountains and forests. This reverence for nature is reflected in the restaurant’s menu, which is dedicated to farm-to-table eating, and sources only the freshest local Tuscan food for its recipes. The view over the magnificent valley and mountains of the Val d’Orcia will visually map the distance food has travelled. Seasonality is fundamental, allowing guests to eat in harmony with the changing landscape around them and with the season’s natural bounty. Castiglioncello del Trinoro is a spectacular location for the restaurant, engaging not only the eyes and of course the palate, but giving diners a taste of what is to come in the balmy aromas that fill the air of Monteverdi.

Giancarla Bodoni

In the planning, opening and operating the restaurant, Oreade has benefitted greatly from the genius of Chef Giancarla Bodoni.  ”I am honored to be involved in this wonderfully innovative project and thrilled to return to my family’s roots. I hope to strike the balance between paying respect to this region’s incredible tradition of culinary mastery while adding a little bit of surprise to the taster’s experience,” commented Ms. Bodoni.

For nearly two decades, Ms. Bodoni has been a pioneer among female chefs—leading the organic/raw-food/farm-to-table charge from her upscale Italian restaurant Escopazzo in Miami, Florida. She is in a class of her own, producing some of the best pasta, meat, fish and vegetable dishes in the world.

To make Oreade a truly great restaurant, I went back to the basics: the purest, best ingredients I could find and never compromise on quality and freshness. I am so excited to be part of Oreade because its location in Tuscany will afford me and our other chefs access to the best, freshest and most savory ingredients in the world. My passion is to make Oreade one of the very best ‘destination’ restaurants in Tuscany and the world. If Italy is the garden of Europe and Tuscany the garden of Italy, then Oreade will be the place people come to eat directly from the garden.”  - Chef Giancarla Bodoni

Our more informal Caffè and Enoteca at Monteverdi, in the heart of the village, is also open daily for lunch and aperitivi and offers a variety of fresh garden salads, the finest regional meats and cheeses, and just-baked panini and crostini. It features famous local wines, including Brunello and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, and other exceptional Italian wines.  We are pleased to offer the Caffe and Enoteca to complete the culinary experience at Monteverdi.

The dining opportunities at Monteverdi are unparalleled. If you are taking advantage of our villa accommodations, in-villa dining with a chef at Monteverdi is a delightful sensory treat. From aperitivo to dolce, our chefs create meals that are as delicious as they are memorable. Whether you choose to have an intimate dinner for two prepared by a chef in the privacy of your villa or a large gathering of family and friends on a private veranda overlooking the Val d’Orcia, we can tailor an authentic Tuscan dining experience for you, for an additional charge.

Additionally, Monteverdi is pleased to provide cooking lessons for our guests.  As you will soon discover when dining with us, our chefs are experts in the cuisine di Toscano, sourcing most ingredients within a few kilometers of the village, which is located in one of the world’s great agricultural regions.  Using these ingredients, guests can learn how to prepare all manner of Tuscan fare, including pasta, sauces, meat, wild game like pheasant, boar and rabbit and, last but not least, dolce.  Cooking lessons are by reservation only.  Villa guests may reserve cooking lessons in the privacy of their own kitchen, Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 11:00 to 12:30.  Hotel guests may reserve cooking lessons in our full service restaurant, Oreade, Tuesday and Thursday, from 11:00 to 12:30.  Reservations are limited and taken on a first come basis.

In 2014, Chef Giancarla will conduct a week-long cooking school at Monteverdi.  Bringing her incredible talents and creativity to host intimate cooking lessons, guests will work side-by-side with Giancarla to create organic, authentic Italian cuisine.

Consider joining us for the Culinary Academy scheduled for November 8 – 15, 2014, which will focus on the late harvest, including fresh olives and prized truffles.  The fee of $10,000 per couple includes: 1) multiple hours of cooking lessons with Giancarla; 2) tours of the very best vineyards in the famous Tuscan regions of Brunello and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano; 3) seven nights at the luxurious Monteverdi; 4) a five-course dinner prepared by the chef to celebrate the week; and 5) wine tastings complemented by local cheeses and meats throughout the week.  To take part in this delicious experience, please contact our travel consultants.
