FAQs Villas

How do I get from the airport in Rome to Monteverdi?

There are three excellent options for traveling to Monteverdi:

Most guests find that renting a car at the airport is the easiest way to travel. There are several rental agencies to choose from and pick-up/drop-off is straightforward and efficient. It is approximately a 2-2.5-hour drive from Rome to Castiglioncello del Trinoro. Please see our driving directions for the best route.

It is possible to hire our car service for the trip from the Roma Airport to Monteverdi Tuscany. Your rental car can be available when you arrive in Castiglioncello, if you would prefer that option. All arrangements can be made by the Monteverdi concierges.

Many guests also choose to take the train from the Roma Termini station located at the Roma Airport to the Chiusi station where there are then picked up by a car service, arranged by the Monteverdi concierges. This trip takes slightly over 3 hours, depending on which train is boarded. Monteverdi concierges can arrange for your rental car to be in the parking lot at Castiglioncello del Trinoro when you arrive.

Specific instructions for all three options are available by contacting the concierge directly at: concierge@monteverdituscany.com

What amenities are included with my villa?

Each villa comes fully equipped with wireless internet access, flat screen TV with DVD player, SKY cable, iPod dock, hair dryer, espresso machine, and many other features of five-star comfort. The modern kitchen includes fabulous appliances and cookware for the professional chef or the casual cook. Robes and slippers are also provided in each bedroom. The electrical outlets are the European, 2-pronged cylinder style, and adapters can be borrowed from the concierge, if needed.

When you arrive, your kitchen will be stocked with coffee and water, which are refreshed daily. A superb selection of several wines will be stored in your villa for your convenience and will be charged to your bill, if consumed, upon your departure. Grocery shopping is available in Sarteano or Chianciano, either of which is a short drive from Castiglioncello del Trinoro.

Our superb workout facility, featuring Techno-Gym equipment and an on-site swimming pool, is available to all guests.

What is the best way to get around when I stay at Monteverdi?

Camminare! Your villa is less than five minutes by foot from Monteverdi’s restaurant, Oreade, our Library Bar, and our Enoteca. The parking lot, lavender and other gardens, reception, gym, archeological dig site and the historic Romanesque church of Sant’Andrea are also a short stroll from your villa. The narrow village roads are bumpy and unpaved, so bring comfortable walking shoes!

Castiglioncello del Trinoro is a very small town on the peak of a mountain where public transportation to nearby towns is not an option. We recommend that you rent a car to make short day trips to the most desirable towns and cities in central Tuscany. Driving in the Val d’Orcia is not intimidating—the roads are well-marked and, armed with the excellent road maps or a GPS, you will find your way with minimal stress.

Should you wish to hire a private driver for the day, the Monteverdi concierge service can arrange that for you. The cost will depend on time and distance.

Where is the closest grocery store/pharmacy/restaurant/cafe/bar/bank/gas station/hair salon? Are credit cards accepted at most places?

The village of Sarteano is a ten-minute drive from your villa. It is a delightful little town with every modern convenience you might need or want.

Most restaurants and stores will take credit cards, but Euros are accepted everywhere! There are ATM machines in almost every town in the area.

Are the villas child-friendly?

Absolutely! Cribs and high-chairs are available at no charge — just give us a little advance notice, and they will be in your villa when you arrive. For a night out without the children and with some advance planning, babysitting can be easily arranged by the concierge. The charge is approximately 20 Euro/hour.

Please keep in mind that toddlers may be challenged by the stairs inside the villas, as well as, the uneven, historic roads and steps in the village. Older children will be delighted by the gardens and secret paths in Castiglioncello.

Our Oreade restaurant is happy to work with you to provide special menus for children under the age of 12. If you would like a private dinner with our chef in your villa, we can customize a dish to meet your child’s preferences.

Unfortunately, dogs, cats and other family pets are not permitted to stay in the villas.

What are my dining options?

Oreade, our fine dining restaurant, is open daily for dinner from 7:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. and for lunch from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. When weather cooperates, our dining terraces are open and serve a stunning view of the valley. We also provide a complimentary, continental breakfast at Oreade from 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

The Enoteca, an intimate and inviting wine bar, also offers a casual lunch and is open from 1:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. (closed Mondays).  It boasts 32 splendid Italian wines by the glass and many more by the bottle.  Our wines for tasting by the glass are perfectly preserved in state-of-the-art stainless steel Enomatic dispensers.

The Library Bar serves bespoke cocktails, local wines and beers, and is open daily from 4:00 p.m. to 10:45 p.m. With its outdoor terrace and glorious views of the Val d’Orcia and Monte Cetona, it is ideal for gathering with friends and family, to enjoy a book or conversation, or to plan your next Tuscan adventure.

What is the appropriate attire for activities at Monteverdi and in the surrounding towns?

Attire at Monteverdi is casual for almost all daytime activities. It is considered respectful for men and women to cover their legs and shoulders when touring churches throughout Italy.

What other activities are available and how do I schedule them?

While Castiglioncello del Trinoro is a quiet village, there are many activities to enjoy. The Monteverdi Gallery is home to an exciting collection of contemporary art by some of the world’s leading visual artists. The gallery’s exhibitions change throughout the year but the current exhibit will always be described on our website. In addition to the gallery, Monteverdi invites several accomplished men and women from the art world to visit and reside at Monteverdi Tuscany, as part of our Artists & Scholars-in-Residence program. Click here to learn about what performance or seminar is occurring during your visit or simply ask personal concierge.

Weekly wine tastings will take place during April through October at the Enoteca.  Leading winemakers in Tuscany host a wine tasting seminar featuring his or her best wines and, indeed, some of the finest wines in the world.  These wine tastings are true master classes in wine and the art of wine making.  The concierge will happily share the schedule for these seminars.

Our pool is hidden in Monteverdi’s gardened terraces and is open to all of our guests. The archeological park, a fascinating Etruscan dig funded and uncovered by Monteverdi founder, Michael Cioffi, is located at the highest peak of Castiglioncello del Trinoro. The village’s history begins here. In addition to these activities, our concierges arrange cooking classes with our chef and yoga sessions with a local instructor.

Outside of Castiglioncello, there are numerous paths that can be crossed by foot, bike or horse. Our concierge can assist you with a map, water and a backpack for your morning hike. There are also bikes at Monteverdi that can be borrowed free of charge.

Think of Castiglioncello as a remarkable base to discover Tuscany. Ask our concierge for help with planning a vineyard visit, an olive oil tasting or a garden tour. The famous Tuscan gardens of La Foce are only a few kilometers away and are a must-see. Castiglioncello is almost equidistant between Rome and Florence and a short drive to the many hilltop towns of Tuscany, including Pienza, Montepulciano and Montalcino – to name only a few. We have an entire menu of private day trips and excursions.

Please contact our concierge service at concierge@monteverdituscany.com prior to your visit, or stop in the office when you arrive.

Is there anything else I might need to know?

The water is safe to drink, the time zone is the same as Rome (GMT +1), and there is no need for air conditioning because we are 2,000 feet up and there’s always a cool breeze.
