A belief in bellezza
Our story
Named for the lush green mountains surrounding the village and 16th century humanist and artist Claudio Monteverdi, Monteverdi represents a peak way of living.
Our beautiful Tuscan village encompasses so much more than a place to stay. There is also a contemporary art gallery, performing arts venue, fine-dining restaurant, osteria, gym, library bar, meeting and retreat center, lounge and terrace bar, and privately sponsored archaeological dig.
Beyond all this, it is a place to inspire, delight and ignite the senses. Monteverdi offers the pleasures of beauty in so many forms – art, architecture, design, concerts, food and wine all wrapped in world-class hospitality.
Our founder
Michael L Cioffi
Michael L Cioffi began his love affair with the Val d’Orcia region in 2003 when he visited Tuscany for a birthday celebration. But just visiting was never going to be enough. Michael had found a special place of tranquility and incomparable beauty, a place that allows you to step out of time.
So in 2005, he began to buy, preserve and restore buildings in the medieval village of Castiglioncello del Trinoro, eventually growing it into a collection of exquisitely restored villas and the boutique hotel, Monteverdi.
To complement the natural beauty of the surroundings, Michael created the artists and scholars in residence program. For over a decade, Monteverdi has regularly hosted an eclectic group of leading contemporary painters, sculptors, scholars singers and musicians to perform, lecture, lead seminars and discussions and generally engage with guests. Past residents include: Playwright Jeremy O. Harris, Wes Anderson, Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Laure Prouvost, Dominique Crenn, Nancy Silverton, Joshua Bell, Olivia Lange, Keb' Mo' and so many more.
Day to day, Michael is a partner in the international law firm of Blank Rome, LLP, and an adjunct Professor of Law at the University of Cincinnati College of law for more than 35 years.
