Hilltowns of Tuscany
Monteverdi finds itself centered in an area that has been inhabited since pre-history. Formed from the time of the Etruscans and Romans, the area has been shaped by Medieval and Renaissance cultures with endless art, culture, and history to explore between iconic and lesser known hilltowns. Unfolding over six or eight hours with professional tour guide and luxury driving service, this excursion can be completely customized based on your interests and includes tickets to muesums.
Some of our favorite towns include:
The iconic hilltowns of Montalcino and Montepulciano whose reputations for producing fine wines, Brunello and Nobile di Montepulciano respectively, are known all around the world. Each hilltown affords stunning panoramic views of the surrounding area and a world to discover within each of their walls. You may enjoy Montalcino's narrow and steep roads cascading from its Fortezza, a centrally located fortress affording panoramic views of three valleys or Montepulciano's Piazza Grande, the beautiful central square, that serves as a connection to its winding streets the feature scores of local artisans and handmade goods.
UNESCO Heritage Pienza, the "ideal city of the Renaissance", was built by Pope Pius II in 1459 in an attempt to turn his birthplace into Italy’s first model city. In modern day, guests can marvel at perfect geometric harmony, with the historic square itself grounded in utopian philosophical principles that date back to Plato or taste cacio e pepe that celebrates the town's most famous food export: pecorino.
